Johnny-come-lately However, after more than one hundred years, there are many continental Americans who are not very sure that the islanders are United States residents and citizens at birth. That is, there is a significant dearth of understanding among the mainlanders in regard to to the legal and political status of the citizens of Puerto Rico. As a matter of fact, some johnny-come-lately groups jingoistically attack the islanders as intruders, or uninvited guests, to the United States. And, there are some bigots (who are usually mongrels projecting their inferiority) who derisively express biased opinions about these patriotic Americans. These narrow-minded people constantly try to restrict the upward mobility of the islanders with their provocations and abusive tactics, which are usually expressed as written or verbal charade. These constricted-minded but opiniated individuals regularly provide garbled views about Puerto Ricans and go on repeating themselves with such trite statements as “they are merely surviving on handouts from society; and, they are simpletons, dropouts, and juvenile delinquents.” And, the reality is that most pea-brained people fail to realize that the islanders were born in the land which became the first truly colonized territory by Europeans in the New World, and the only land in the New World where its residents were the last true citizens of an European power; that the islanders have been retroactively United States citizens by birth since 1899; and, that most islanders are resigned in not giving up a culture that has evolved for over 500 years just to submerge themselves in a faceless society. And, the island of Puerto Rico has produced prodigious personalities in almost every field, especially singers, painters, writers, and entertainers. That a subgroup of Puerto Ricans have provided the ammunition for some mainland bigots to discredit the integrity and creativity of most islanders is unfortunate but is a reality. However, the fact is that the island have produced much talent and its soldiers are and have been among the most patriotic and heroic individuals born in the United States.
